All things work together

“We know that all things work together
for good for those who love God,
who are called according to His purpose.”
–Romans 8:28

This verse has been prevalent in my mind lately. A friend recently downloaded an enormous struggle she had been going through and she kept coming back to this verse. This verse in many ways sustained her. As she unveiled her story, an enormous number of synchronicities were revealed. It was truly remarkable the dozens of absurdly unlikely connections that had taken place to put just the right people in her life to take care of her right now. As I looked at the web of connections surrounding her, the verse she had clung to took on new meaning for me or rather certain words were came to the forefront; specifically, “all things work together.”

Usually I hear this verse quoted in the context of trying to grasp how good could come out of something awful. The emphasize is on the concept that everything has a purpose and no matter how tragic things may look God is going to use it for good in someway. I am not contesting that and that’s probably where most of my friend’s attention was around this verse. However, what leapt out for me was the “all things working together” portion of the verse. I was amazed at the intricate web of events surrounding her and how each part played some interdependent role in the good things that had occur to her.

Have you stopped to ponder a blessing recently.  Specifically, have you given any consideration to the many things that had transpired for that blessing to occur? Have you thought about the web of people God has placed in your life either directly or indirectly? Recently, my wife was praying a blessing for our meal. She spoke of: the farmer, the people who processed the food, the drivers who delivered it, the people who stocked it and sold it. I could see in my mind a great trail of people leading up to the bread I was about to eat. I was receiving something very good and a lot had gone into the making of it.

What are the blessings in your life right now? What is good and how have many things worked together if not all things in order to bring that goodness?
