If you are among the ranks of those who have vowed in 2012 to lose weight or get in shape today’s interview is a must read. Even if you are not marching down the path to fitness I am going to beg you to go ahead and read this post.

Why? Because the woman you are about to learn about is a christian woman who is incredibly inspiring. Her name is Valerie Solomon. She is the daughter-in-law of one of our church members and I had the honor a year ago of baptizing her son just before her husband, Matthew left for a year long military deployment to Afghanistan. (BTW–Matt is wrapping up his deployment and due home any day now, so keep him in your prayers for a safe return home.)

Most important of all Valerie is a dedicated christian who really strives to submit to whatever God is calling her to do moment by moment and I find her to have an amazingly down-to-earth humble spirit. From Valerie’s very first facebook post on July 31st, 2011 she has been a personal inspiration to me and continues to be.

I hope you enjoy this interview as she shares very openly the spiritual journey that she took as she strove to reach her physical goals. Here it is:
___________________________

John: Valerie tells us about your initial goals and what inspired you to make them.

Valerie: I have found that anytime my husband is gone for any significant length of time due to his job in the army, I am much happier if I stay busy and productive.

He left about a year ago for a year long deployment to Afghanistan. I decided that in 2011 I would focus on getting fit, learn to eat and cook healthier, and complete my personal training certification. It only took me a couple of months to feel like I had completed these goals. I needed a bigger challenge. I decided (after months of encouragement from some gym friends) to compete in a Figure competition. This required months of intense strength training, which I LOVE. And months of tedious diet.

John: What is a Figure Competition?

Valerie: Figure is a form of female body building. You are judged on muscle tone and definition, but still keeping a feminine appearance.

I didn’t openly commit to competing for awhile because I was worried what others would think. I was worried it was sinful to care about getting in extremely good shape and standing on stage. I wasn’t sure what the Bible said about fitness.

I sought out the answers to my questions and prayed about it. —-

After asking several pastors their thoughts on the matter and for scripture references, I have come to these conclusions:

God wants us to take care of our bodies.

With balance and perspective- it’s ok for me to strive to be the best version of me as possible

“Somewhere between vanity and gluttony lies abundant living.” Jimmy Pena (I messaged PrayFit author Jimmy Pena on facebook and he has been kind enough to share his thoughts with me….this is one quote I loved from a note he sent.)

Our bodies are a gift from God. How do you show appreciation for a gift that someone gives you? You take care of it; treasure it. I feel the same about our bodies.

Some favorite Scriptures of mine that have inspired me are:

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. 3 John 1:2

Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come. Prov 31:25

John: Tell us about Busy Mom Gets Fit and why you started it?

Valerie: In August 2011, I was just a few months away from my first Figure Competition. I felt like my thoughts were really consumed by my new fitness way of life and some of my friends and family were interested in it. I didn’t want to annoy my regular Facebook friends with my fitness posts, so I started “Busy Mom Gets Fit” as an outlet for fitness thoughts and to allow me to connect to people who were interested and needed some help or guidance. I have been amazed at the number of people who have joined me on my page.

When I competed, I felt this overwhelming sense of confidence. It wasn’t about competing with the other women in the competition. It was empowering to stand up there and know that I had worked hard and accomplished something. The competition, was more about the journey of getting there. I feel like it has given me a platform to connect to more people and inspire others to go after big goals that may be outside of their comfort zone. (Val with her first trophy and trainers/coaches, pictured right)

John: How did prayer play a part in your journey?

Valerie: John. I have 3 specific prayers I would like to share:

I prayed this several months ago after a day of really feeling inadequate:

“I’m sorry that I’m not as faithful as I should be to you. I feel blessed and taken care of but so often I skip reading the Bible and praying like I should.”

I immediately felt like God wrapped me up in a hug. I physically felt it. I think he was saying what hugs often say—

“It’s ok. You are doing what I want you to do.” I quit beating myself up about it and realize that my job right now is to take care of my boys and continue to do my best.

I prayed this when in thought about competition in a Figure competiton:

“I’d like to do this. To help others through my journey and not come across as vain. Help others to see my heart.” I think he has answered and done this.

I prayed this recently:

“If you want to use me through this, I’ll do it.” Almost immediately I started seeing him at work. It’s been fun to watch unfold.

John: So now that you have completed your initial goals what are your new goals?

Valerie: My initial goal was to keep busy while my husband was away and make a positive change for myself. My new goals are to continue on this fitness journey and see where it leads me.

John: What Have you learned spirtitually?”

Valerie: Spiritually, I have learned that God can make anything “a God thing”. He has put people in my path almost daily to help me and for me to help. Keep your eyes open, especially when you say you’ll do whatever he wants you to do!!!

John: What surprises have you had along the way?

Valerie: Use your talents and skills that God gave you. Even if you don’t see the big picture, he’s got a plan.

John: I think some readers may be a bit intimidated about starting out. What would you tell someone who is just starting out who wants to take better care of the body God has gifted them with?

Valerie: Start with what you put into your mouth. You can’t make any excuses about time or money on this one. We all eat…most of us eat too much. Read Val’s getting started tips.

Strength train- It’s benefits are numerous for all. It is the only way to stay fit and lean for the long term.

Find a form of cardio that you enjoy and get your heart rate up 60-120 minutes a week.

I have an article for those who are getting started called on BusyMomGetsFit.com called, I want to be fit!, Where do I start? In it I lay out several different sample workouts based off of how many days you could go to the gym as well as some other tips.

Do you ever feel as if you are praying the same things over and over again? Or, do you find yourself at a loss for words only minutes into praying? Does your mind wander when you pray? These are extremely common problems which can readily be addressed by simply adopting a prayer model. I have found that praying an A.C.T.S. prayer is a great way to both focus my prayer and expand my prayer vocabulary. It is one of my favorite prayer disciplines. A.C.T.S. stands for:
Adoration
Confession
Thanksgiving
Supplication
Adoration
What does it mean to adore someone? It means that you love them. You love who they are and what they do. When I adore God I use what I call the formula of praise. This formula is a recurring pattern I noticed in the Psalms. David adores God in three ways: First, he tells God that he loves Him. Second, he praises God for ...

Second, he praises God for who God is. Third, he praises God for what God does. To learn more about the formula of praise and to see examples click here and read the post, The Formula of Praise.

Confession

When I extol the goodness of God through adoration I find myself humbled. I am reminded of my sins. So I move from adoration into confession. When you confess try to be specific about acknowledging what you have done wrong. Get beyond generic confessions such as, “I haven’t been as loving as I should be.” Be specific, “God I have been avoiding Janet because I am angry with her. Forgive me for pushing her to the side so that I don’t have to deal with my anger. It is sinful for me to not give her the grace I have received.” Being specific will help you change. Notice in the example that I actively acknowledged my action as sin and why it is wrong. That sort of processing your actions within your prayers will help you change, but you only get there by being specific. To learn more about confession click here and read the post, Eradicating Spiritual Virus.

Thanksgiving

I am not sure I need to say much about thanks because most of us readily know how to say thank you and what gratitude is. I do want to point out two things. First, my experience has been that having thanks in my prayer model forces me to consider what I am grateful for on the days I feel less than grateful. Paul told the Colossians, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” (Colossians 3:16) Second, I actively give thanks for the whole of creation. I don’t only focus on the people and circumstance of my life. I give thanks for the earth, the plants, the trees, the animals, the birds, the stars, the sun, and the moon and all of these amazing pieces of creation that God has intricately woven together to make life possible.

Supplication

To supplicate simply means to ask. At this point in your prayer offer God the concerns of your heart. Pray for friends, family, community, situations and yourself. Pray for whatever concerns you. Take time to intercede for others. I used to think that intercession just meant praying for someone else in general. However, as I studied the scriptures about interceding, I noticed that intercession almost always means praying about someone’s spiritual well-being. You may want to adopt someone specific to pray for daily. I find that to be a very powerful prayer discipline.

Lastly, when trying a new prayer discipline like praying A.C.T.S. prayers, do it for several weeks before judging the merits of the practice. Your entire first week you may be just getting comfortable with the practice. I highly recommend living into a practice a minimum of three weeks. Research suggests that it takes as much as 18 days for something to become a habit or norm for us. Persevere for a season so that you can see the fruit.

In my last post, Thorns in the Rose Garden of Spiritual Growth, I spoke about how spiritual growth can be painful because significant change is uncomfortable. This post addresses ten common ways people resist change. Think of these things as yield signs warning you to proceed with caution.

1. Constantly changing mentors, churches, Sunday school classes, etc., because you can’t find the perfect one. The only constant in that equation is typically you. When you are stuck and really don’t want to change then you will just keep jumping to new people. You are hoping to find people who will validate the position you want to keep. Ironically, you just keep changing whatever challenges you, so that you don’t have to change.
2. Rationalizing where you are. You know exactly what you need to do, but you have an endless supply of reasons why you cannot. If pushed on why, you ...

If pushed on why, you either keep changing your reasons or get very defensive.

3. “If-only-itis”. That’s what I call it when someone is struggling internally and he or she thinks, “If only I could…..(insert fantasy of choice here)….then life would be good.” For example, “If only I could get a new job, or spouse, or home.” This phenomenon is so common it is nearly predictable. A pastor once described to me a parishioner who was showing classic signs of hitting the shock of significant spiritual growth. She had started intensively studying the Bible and it pushed her through so much change that she found herself reeling in confusion. So many basic assumptions about God and what it meant to follow God had gotten significantly challenged. So I asked, “Let me guess, is she moving, getting divorced, or quitting her job?” My friend replied, “Getting divorced.” Sadly, what inevitably happens if someone makes one of those changes, he or she discovers in six months that the new spouse, job or home is just like the one they left. Guess what, the problem wasn’t on the outside.

I need to qualify this. Sometimes significant spiritual growth pushes major changes that are needed. There is a fine line of discernment in knowing the difference. Often times when we are motivated by just wanting to escape, we will keep recreating the same scenarios. So be very intentional about why you are making big changes.

4. Longing for the good old days. You yearn to return to life as it was. You may even glorify the past into something it wasn’t. Remember that some of the Israelites stood on the border of the promise land and wanted to go back to Egypt. Stop and think about that. There they were ready to have it all and their fear of living into that had them saying, “Hey I think I’d like to go back to Egypt.” I can almost hear Moses saying, “Excuse me. Don’t you remember that we were slaves in Egypt. Have you forgotten making bricks without straw.” But guess what…that is human nature. When faced with change, even good change, fear of the unknown will prompt you to edit and glorify the past. You will cling to it and stay stuck.

5. Spiraling in addiction. Think of this more broadly than just drugs or alcohol. When you abuse something as an escape to the point it is problematic then you need to pay attention. For example, if you come home plop on the couch and channel surf until the wee hours, and then are struggling to function at work. That’s problematic. Television, computers, relationships, food, sex and even exercise can be abused and used to escape. Escape isn’t always bad. Some times we just need to numb out for a bit. However, if the bit becomes such a norm that your paying for it in other areas of your life, then you know you have a problem.

—————-

These next five are signs that you are so overwhelmed by change that you are shutting down.

6. Failing to maintain the basics. Some real basics of life are just getting neglected. You have dirty dishes piled in the sink. You have money, but are behind on paying bills. Clutter has accumulate to the point it is unmanageable. Your pulling clothes out of a laundry pile in order to dress. Your car is accumulating fast food bags. Sometimes this is life because you are just overly busy. However, it is also a common reaction when someone is overwhelmed by change and getting paralyzed by it. Frankly, if you are that overly busy, wake up. Something is wrong

7. Isolating. If you are withdrawing because you feel like no one understands what you are going through, then you may be hitting some walls of growth. Feelings of loneliness or being misunderstood are not uncommon when you go through a spiritual growth spurt. Solitude (purposeful withdrawal for renewal) is healthy. Isolationism is not.

8. Physically Stagnating. Some people physically shut down when faced with change. Their energy disappears. They are overwhelmingly tired and may literally not be able to get up off of the couch.

9. Missing beauty. You become aesthetically blind. You float through life not noticing the Fall leaves, the pleasantness of rain on a roof, the pure joy of a child at play and many of life’s obvious beautiful pleasures. Your feelings and emotions are muted. You do not experience joy in things you typically love.

10. Losing laughter. That’s pretty self explanatory. Well, these are just some of the signs that you may be overwhelmed by and/or resisting change. Everyone is different. I don’t know if you noticed but many of these things are not cut and dry signs. Nevertheless, you should slow down and try to figure out what is going on when you see them. Most of us tend toward pet favorites. It’s really helpful to know yours. What would you say are the three most likely ways that you resist change out of the list above? Can you think of times when any of these described you? What was the change you were resisting or experiencing?

-

In my next post I will address some tools to help you get through the tough times of spiritual growth. Blessings to you from The Practical Disciple.
