Don’t overlook the basics–Starting the Day in the Word

As some of you know, over the last three months I was on a Sabbatical. A Sabbatical is a dangerous thing. Your time is almost entirely your own. You have no one to point a finger at if you miss your morning devotional time, fail to work out, or some other basic activity of a good life. I learned a lot about myself during that time and why I do or don’t do things.

The hobgoblin of my missed morning devotional is busyness. When I do fail to get my Bible reading done in the morning, the simple and undeniable reality I find is that it’s because I simply failed to make it a priority. I allowed other activities to nudge there way to the head of the line, or blatantly invited them to cut in. Or, the night before I stayed up entirely too late and woke up unable to make a decent decision with my sleep deprived brain.

All of this said, I have never ever regretted having a morning devotional time. Beyond a shadow of a doubt when I spend time in the Word of God at the beginning of the day, I am a better functioning human being. I can’t quite quantify why or how, but I am. So, it seems like a no brainer that I would never want to miss it.

I have heard it said, “The main thing in life, is learning to keep the main thing, the main thing.” For a follower of Jesus Christ there are few main things more important than getting what I call a “dose of the Ghost” by spending time in Scripture. God’s Word comforts, convicts, instructs, inspires, informs, and much, much more. Why would I ever think about going into my day without first touching base in it?

Well, today, I just wanted to encourage you to get in the Word at the top of your day everyday. You don’t have to have a mind-blowing, soul-expanding experience every time you sit down with the Word. But, don’t skip it. Morning devotional time is breakfast for the soul. Sometimes breakfast is just a bowl of cereal and a glass of OJ. Sometimes it’s a feast of omelets, fruit, toast, and more. Either way it’s necessary.

Ironically, it’s 8:03 a.m. as I write this and I have neither had my time in the Word or breakfast, yet. So, I need to wrap this up and go practice what I preach.

Blessings to you as you meet God in the morning,
