Choosing a Bible when you are a beginner

Choosing a Bible when you are a beginner

Periodically, someone asks me, “What is the best Bible?”, particularly, if someone is new to Bible reading.  Usually, what he or she is actually asking is which translation is best.  Translation is only one of multiple considerations though to keep in mind as you purchase a Bible.  Here are some other features that make for an extremely functional devotional/study Bible.  I’ll deal with translation in a separate post. 1.  A decent size font--Get a Bible with … Read entire article »

Prayer Journal Passages

In my last post, I gave you a video tutorial on one method of prayer journaling. It struck me afterwards that some of you might be curious about the scripture passages that our youth are using. I gave each youth an envelope with fourteen verses and told them to just randomly pick one each day. All of the verses are associated with prayer in some way. If you want to join us, here are the verses we are drawing from to get you started.  They are in no particular order. Matthew 6:5-8 Psalm 100 Philippians 4:8-9 Matthew 6:25-26 Luke 17:12-19 Luke 1:46-55 Philippians 4:4-7 Mark 14:32-42 Psalm 46:1-5,10-11 Luke 11:9-13 Psalm 34:1-8 Luke 18:10-14 Jonah 2:1-10 Genesis 28:11-19 Also, I mentioned in the video noting the subject of the passage you are journaling on, but I really didn’t say much more … Read entire article »

Lectio Divina is Latin for “divine reading” or “holy reading” and there are four lectio divina steps that I will cover in this post.  Lectio is a Christian tradition of prayerfully reading a passage from scripture by tarrying with the text pondering it’s meaning and lifting up words of thanks. The intent of Lectio is to both increase our understanding of the Word and nurture a deeper more open connection with God through His Word. A well rounded approach to scripture involves what I call both informational and formational reading.  Most Bible study tends toward the informational side of the equation.  Informational study is predominantly about getting to know the Bible stories and the principles presented therein.  Formational reading involves taking time to encounter the text in a way that shapes … Read entire article »

Making your Bible Reading Plan Work

Two days ago I was speaking to a Practical Disciple reader who had downloaded one of the reading plans from my last post, 3 Great Bible Reading Plans. He told me that he and his wife were trying it. He rightly recognized quickly that you need a set time, if you are going to read consistently. It jar me awake to the reality that any tool is only perhaps as good as the instruction that goes with it. So here are five tips on succeeding at maintaining a reading schedule. There really simple and you can implement them today. 1) Print out your plan and place it some place visible with your Bible. High visibility will help you read consistently.  Also don’t forget to check off … Read entire article »
