Three Tips on How to Prayer for Your Nation and Leaders [Episode 47]

Three Tips On How to Pray for Your Nation and Leaders

Are you concerned about your country? Praying for it is one of the best things you can be doing, no matter what country you are from.

In the United States, May 2nd was the National Day of Prayer.  The night before I led a lesson on the topic of praying for our leaders and nation at our church. We then prayed together for our country. It was a moving experience.

I covered three simple ways we should be praying for our nation and leaders, not just one time a year, but regularly, if not daily. These three simply ways are not specific to any country.  They could be utilized for the benefit of every country and even applied globally.

For today’s podcast I’ve captured the audio from that lesson for my church.  Below are the three tips I offered and the scriptures associated with each tip. The podcast goes into m much greater depth.

1. Pray for the leaders of your country to come together to provide strategic leadership that will lead to righteous and peaceful living.

“First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2

Examples of prayers for our leaders…

  • Father, we appeal to You for our President and Vice President, members of the Cabinet, along with the members of both the House and the Senate, to make decisions that will lead toward a more righteous, peaceful, and orderly America.
  • Lord, we also ask that these leaders lead us to ways that represent You and Your ways; including decisions that will lead toward the dignity and sanctity of all human life from conception until death.
  • Lord God, may these leaders provide ways for our nation to be secure from terrorism inside and outside of the borders of America.

2. Pray for unity of the church in your country or the world.

“Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.” 1 Corinthians 1:10

Examples of prayers for unity…

  • Sovereign Eternal God, miraculously give unity of thought and strategy for the good of our nation between the White House, the United States House of Representatives, and the United States Senate.
  • Heavenly God we pray that you will unify us upon the authority of the Bible and the centrality of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. God move us back to these basic beliefs.
  • God we also pray for thousands of local churches to unify as one body of Christ, agreeing together that you are our greatest need in America.
  • Lord we confess and repent of the sin of division in the Church of America, supported by the sins of skepticism, criticism, and cynicism; due to an arrogance toward brothers and sisters who may look different than us, and may believe something a little different than us about secondary matters of the faith.

3. Pray for repentance

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:1.

Examples of national prayers of repentance…

  • God the most basic thing you call us to do is to love one another, but God forgive us because often times we are hateful. We post memes, articles, and painful comments on social media demeaning people whom we disagree with rather than simply uplifting the truth.
  • God as a country worship is no longer the priority it should be.  We flock to Stadiums and kid’s sports events on weekends, but do not honor you.  We strip prayer from public venues for fear of offending someone.
  • Forgive us God that as a nation we have failed to figure out how to live peaceably with all nations. When diplomatic efforts fail open our eyes to new paths. Some relationships with other nations we cannot control. Despite our best efforts they chose to seek us harm. Help us Lord as a nation to overcome evil with good rather than to retaliate.  Teach us what that would mean as a nation, so that we may behave righteously in our all our international relationships.
