5 Ways to Dwell on Good People

Last post I discussed the discipleship value of dwelling on or focusing your mind on certain people; specifically, Christ, biblical faith heroes, historic faith heroes, people who have blessed you, and people who need a blessing.  Now here are five concrete ways to focus your mind upon them.

  1. Make lists.  Pick a person and make lists about them.  What makes them a faith hero or influence in your life?  Things to list could include but not be limited to:  their character traits, their habits, important actions they took, and life lessons you learned from them.
  2. Imitate.  Paul said, “The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:9.  He also said, “Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern  you have in us.”  So what are what was can you imitate your role models today?
  3. Use Art.  Take what you have learned about someone and try to expresses it artistically.  Draw a symbolic picture, pen a poem, or put together a collage.  That may sound odd to you, but when you try to express through art what you observe you are forced to engage more of your brain in the process and you really have to spend some time in reflection.  If you are wanting to rapidly reject this because you are thinking, “I’m not artistic.  I can’t even draw stick people.”  That’s fine you are not going to put this in a museum or get graded.  Scribble however you want, but the process will really help you internalize great lessons.
  4. Teach or tell.  Teachers almost always learn more than students.  Sharing will help you integrate and clarify your understanding of the influential people in your faith.  If you have been reading about a great figure of faith tell someone about it.  Get conversational about the mentors in your life.
  5. Paraphrase.  If the person you are focusing on has taught or written, then consider trying to place their teachings in your own words.  This process will force you to slow down and dwell a bit on the person you have selected.  Once again, expression helps you with integration or incorporation of the lessons you learn.
If you struggle with having time to “dwell on” anything, then you might want to read these prior posts.
Hope these are helpful to you.  Blessings from The Practical Disciple
